Chapter Seven

Micah walked. Hour after hour, in daylight and darkness and the twilight time in between, he walked. And always he headed towards the star formation he had spent so much time studying while he was tied up on the terrace in the early evening.

He was going back to Attlad. He knew he would be punished, and the fear twisted inside his stomach and made his heart beat faster. But the real dread was that Attlad might reject him. When this thought came, his body went cold and his mind closed off defensively. If this happened, his life was over. Perhaps in the end, his suffering, his rejection of his own people, all would be for nothing. But he refused to consider this for long. He kept his mind focused on his total submission to his master. He would give as he had never given before and in the end, he would merge with Attlad and they would both be stronger. In this was his power, his strength and his whole purpose in living.

When had he come to realize what Attlad meant to him? When had it finally occurred to him that all his life he had been searching for the perfect master and that with Attlad, he was at last living his secret fantasy? It had taken Forrest’s sharp words to bring it all into focus. He had fought the knowledge automatically because he had been trained to fight anyone who might capture him, to view this person as ‘the enemy’. Even the hint of fraternization would be viewed as a breach of trust. As a full-fledged Nebula Warrior, it would have been traitorous for him to consider his new life as acceptable in any way.

After a while, his fatigue, his bruised and aching feet, and the hunger that began to gnaw at him continually kept his mind occupied. He knew he would accept whatever punishment was given him. He would suffer it all for Attlad. It took far longer getting back to the Complex, since he had no swift running river to help him. Now it was all uphill and he often had to go far out of his way because of the cliffs and huge slate-smooth rocks that towered high above the river. But he kept on going.

At last he began to recognize landmarks. And he began to have the strong feeling that he was being watched. He knew there were lookouts posted for miles around the Complex, but he never saw anyone. He was not challenged. Far from reassuring him, this filled him with sick apprehension, but he kept on going, until one day, around noon, he climbed the steps to the main gate and walked past the sentries into the courtyard.

There were soldiers standing about and guards and men with horses. And they all looked at him curiously. But still no one stopped him or interfered with him in any way. Micah knew Attlad often spent these hours going over reports on his private terrace above the second courtyard, and he went through the final gate into the inner yard.
